There is a new one-year graduate certificate that some of your students may be interested in. This certificate is designed for DC metropolitan area classroom history, social studies and language arts teachers, as well as historic site interpreters, education outreach coordinators, and others who interact with diverse populations of K-12 children and youth.

Certificate courses are focused on: historical thinking, place-based learning, collaboration, practitioner inquiry, reflective practice, critical pedagogy, critical multicultural history, urban education theory, the uses of digital media, and the use of alternative modalities, including arts integration.

Human Rights Delegations to Bosnia, Rwanda and New York City

Global Youth Connect, a human rights education and activism organization based in NYC, is accepting applications from young leaders for its Summer 2012 programs, which will take place in
Bosnia, Rwanda, and in New York City.

Each program brings 15 visiting youth from around the world together with 15 youth in the host location (Bosnia, Rwanda, or NYC) to engage together in: a human rights workshop, key visits with policy makers and to historic sites, and volunteer service with grassroots NGOs on a variety of human rights issues.

Given the age range of the programming 16 - 30 (NYC) & 18 - 35 (Rwanda/Bosnia), this is an opportunity for not only students but also for young teachers and professionals to gain intercultural human rights experience and get involved in the global human rights movement (including the movement for Human Rights in the USA).

Several spots are remaining on all three programs, for both host and visiting participants. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2012.

An earlier decision on all delegations is possible. If interested in an earlier decision, please contact us at contact@globalyouthconnect.org, although some positions will be reserved for the final deadline.

LINK People's Tour at Mason

On March 1st, Liberty in North Korea (LINK) will be coming to George Mason's Fairfax campus to screen the documentary The People's Crisis, which details the hardships faced by the North Korean people. LINK's mission is as follows: "Redefining the North Korea crisis through creative storytelling, while providing emergency relief to North Korean refugees and pursuing an end to the human rights crisis."

The free screening will take place on Thursday, March 1st, 2012 at 7:30 pm in the Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall on George Mason's Fairfax Campus.

President Leadership Dialogues: Students Meet With President Merten

The LEAD Office is hosting the Presidential Leadership Dialogues on March 7th, from 4:30pm-6:15pm in Mason Hall, Meese Room.

The Presidential Leadership Dialogues are designed to give students exposure to the university President (Dr. Alan Merten), who can mentor and cultivate students, share his own experiences, and inspire people to be leaders both at Mason and within the community. You will have an opportunity to participate in a dialogue session with President Merten and other fellow Mason students. This is a wonderful opportunity and I encourage you to attend if you are able to. If you are able to participate in thePresidential Leadership Dialogues on March 7th you will be required to read a short article around leadership.The LEAD Office will provide students with the required reading. The reading will be available for pick up on February 29th.

Peer Education Mentoring Program for CISA

The Center for International Student Access (CISA) seeks applicants for the Peer Educational Mentorship (PEM) Program, a paid opportunity for qualified, motivated students at Mason who are focused on leadership opportunities and intercultural experiences.

The mentors, called Peer Educators (PEs), will serve as role models to international students in the ACCESS and BRIDGE Programs, with the possibility of working with international students in the Global Understanding Experience (GLUE) Program (offered through the Office of Global and International Strategies in summer term). PEs will also provide advice, encouragement, and positive reinforcement to build self-confidence among their mentees.

This peer mentorship is a year-long commitment; it aims to assist first-year international mentees with their academic studies and help them to become active members of the university community.

Participation Benefits

Earn a stipend of $750 per semester, for a total of $1,500 over the 2012-2013 academic year.

2012 Taiwan Research Scholarship

APPLY NOW for the 2012 Taiwan Research Scholarship and travel to Taiwan this summer!

The Taiwan Studies Research Travel Grants support students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences working on their projects, capstone courses or independent studies with a focus on Taiwan.

The grant is designed to give each student an opportunity to work closely with a designated faculty member and to explore resources in Taiwan. This may include (but not limited to) archives and libraries; historical sites; museums, art galleries and exhibits; performances; government agencies; non-profit organizations; businesses; experts, professors, scholars or individuals who could contribute to the student's area of research.

Sponsored by the Cultural Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), four awards of $2,500 each will be given in the summer.

Students must be able to travel to Taiwan by June 1, 2012. National Taiwan Normal University will offer mentoring assistance to recipients of this scholarship.

Criteria for Selection

Students are expected to have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA. Knowledge of the Chinese language is desirable but not necessary.

Students must have at least one remaining semester after returning from Taiwan.
Be enrolled as a George Mason University student and hold US citizenship

Turkish Cultural Exchange Fellowship

About

The Turkish Cultural Foundation Cultural Exchange Fellowship is awarded competitively to Turkish and non-Turkish artists and professionals who work in culture and arts.

Awards

The TCF Cultural Exchange Fellowship ranges from $1,000 to $2000. Fellows will receive their fellowship payments via a United States bank check.

These are the two different categories for which applicants may apply to TCF for support:

I - Event Participation or Collaborations in Art and Culture: $ 1,000

Event Participation

Turkish applicants must be accepted to participate in an event abroad (conference, festival, exhibition or fair) related to art and culture, as presenters or speakers. Non-Turkish applicants must be accepted to participate in an event in Turkey (conference, festival, exhibition or fair) as presenters or speakers.

Collaborations in Art and Culture

Turkish artists and professionals must be primary participants in a collaborative artistic or cultural program/project abroad with fellow artists and professionals at a workshop/studio/atelier, museum, cultural or educational institution. Non-Turkish artists and professionals must be primary participants in a collaborative artistic or cultural project in Turkey with fellow artists and professionals in a workshop/studio/atelier, museum, cultural or educational institution.

II - Residencies in Art and Culture: $ 2,000

Turkish artists and professionals must be accepted in a Residency Program abroad at a workshop/studio/atelier, museum or other cultural institution environment. Non-Turkish artists and professionals must be accepted in a Residency Program in Turkey at a workshop/studio/atelier, museum, other cultural or educational institution environment.

The minimum duration of the in-country (Turkey or third country) Residency program must be two weeks.

Eligibility

Individuals who work professionally in the fields of traditional arts, cultural relations, visual arts and new media, film and video arts, conservation, restoration, literary arts, music, dance, theatre and performance arts, are invited to submit applications for the TCF Cultural Exchange Fellowship.

Individuals who participate in events or projects which already receive funding under the TCF Grant Program are ineligible for the TCF Cultural Exchange Fellowship.

How to Apply

Applications must be completed and submitted with the following by March 30, 2012.

Project description (max. 2,000 words) that includes a description of the event (include event program), collaboration, or residency

Summer Study Abroad Program in South Africa

Are you interested in studying abroad in South Africa this summer? Students will travel to Durban, South Africa, and will focus on a variety of issues and organizations related to HIV/AIDS, culture, and health. A curriculum and requirements have been established that will yield 6 credits (tuition cost is included in the trip) toward the BS in Community Health, NCC, towards your master's degree and/or possibly other credits if your department will approve. With some additional work this can fulfill the master's degree requirement for the practicum (GCH 790).

Dr. Joshua Rosenberger will be the faculty member traveling to South Africa for the study program. If you think you are interested in hearing specific details there will be an informational session on Thursday Feb 9th in Room 5 in Student Union Building II between 11am-7:00pm. There will be someone present during that time to answer questions about the program and a formal 30 minute presentation on that day at 1:30 and again at 5:30. Please try and attend one of those sessions if you have questions. If you are unable to attend but are interested in going please contact Dr. Rosenberger with any questions at jrosen10@gmu.edu

C-SPAN's Booknotes: The Brian Lamb Collection

George Mason University Libraries has acquired the entire collection of the books discussed on
C-SPAN’s long running “Booknotes” television series hosted by Brian Lamb. Many of the books contain notes written by Lamb, which were the basis for his interview questions with the authors. The books and notes, and letters as well as the hour-long interview with the authors are available to the Mason Community through Special Collections and Archives (SC&A) in room C 204 of the Fenwick Library.

1) African and African and African American Studies (AAAS), and the School of Art (SOA), with cosponsorship from University Life, the Department of Art and Art History, and the Women and Gender Studies Program, present the photography and multimedia show, "Progeny" by Mason Alumna, Deborah Willis, and her son, Hank Willis Thomas. The show is currently on display in the School of Art gallery, and will run through Wednesday February 29th. What is Global Crossings? a multicultural LLC that pairs international and domestic students together in the Hampton Roads Residence Hall. participants engage in international activities and develop global leadership skills through a year-long one-credit course.

Who is Eligible? Upper class students currently residing on campus who are interested in living with someone from another culture and expanding their international awareness. All majors are welcome.

The theme of the conference is "Response Ability."

What Is Response Ability?

Leadership and responsibility are words that many people use. They also ascribe different meanings and characteristics to them. Scholars have put forth various theories to define leadership and the characteristics of good and responsible leaders. The concept of response ability asks us to consider how to prepare ourselves for the responsibility of leadership within our groups and communities as well as to develop the ability to respond when we see actions and behaviors that are contrary to our established values and community standards.

Response Ability asks you to explore other theories, opinions, and possibilities in leadership and in all areas that leaders touch. We ask simply..."You can lead, but do you have the ability to respond?"

Keynote Speaker: Mike Dilbeck "Response Ability: Being an Every Day Hero"

Mike is a Chicago-based filmmaker turned advocate. Since 1990, he has created educational projects aimed at empowering young people. He has produced more than 60 educational and promotional film projects for higher education organizations over the past two decades, earning awards and a reputation for challenging negative social norms in college student communities. He now dedicates himself full-time to the RESPONSE ABILITY Project and its newest initiative: the Every|Day Hero Campaign. He is a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and founded his chapter at Texas Christian University. He also served his international fraternity as Assistant Executive Director.

In this galvanizing keynote, Mike reveals the nature of this social phenomenon and the barriers many of us feel when we consider whether or not to act—those that get in the way of being a hero to other people, organizations and issues. Students from all walks of life will then understand how seizing the opportunity to act can dramatically change their campus, and how it can allow them to be the every|day hero they want to be. Mike concentrates on giving his audience three powerful life skills to use whenever they see unhealthy or negative behavior among their peers, in their classes, on their campuses and in their lives:

• IDENTIFY those moments when there is a problem
• GO BEYOND the powerful thought—the barrier—that will immediately be there in the way of intervention 
• TAKE ACTION—any kind of action—to make a difference in the situation

In a non-confrontational style, Mike reveals how we all participate in bystander behavior and includes situations where he, himself, witnessed harmful situations and let them occur without intervening. He also emphasizes that these life skills go beyond the campus, and that students will be equipped for life to deal with problems as they see them happening around them.

Lead An International Dinner

Each semester the Global Proficiency Certificate (GPC) Program (gpc.gmu.edu) hosts a student-led international dinner (previous dinners have included Korean & Turkish cuisines).

We are looking for a responsible individual/group of individuals (no more than 3 people) to lead our spring dinner Tuesday March 27, 2012. Proposals are due Feb. 24, 2012 by 5PM. Please send all questions and completed proposals to NKaya1@gmu.edu.

Leader’s Responsibilities:

• Decide on an easy to prepare meal that can feed approximately 15 people including drinks and dessert for under $150.00

• Provide recipes and a grocery list (one copy of the grocery list should be in English and one copy must be written in a native language of the chosen culture)

• Find an international grocery store close to the Fairfax campus where the food/ingredients can be purchased

• Teach the group how to prepare/cook the meal (everyone will help with the cooking process- you will give each person a task to do)

*Optional bring a DVD, game, or other activity from the featured culture to share and educate others

We will meet at the designated grocery store at approximately 4:30PM and arrive back at GMU’s Hampton Road’s kitchen & multipurpose room around 5:30PM. The room is booked until 10PM; while you are not obligated to stay this long, you will need to be there through the duration of the meal preparation.

Students, faculty and scholars are invited to attend and actively participate in a one-day conference where various speakers unpack the ways in which "progress" is viewed and articulated within the context of India. Emerging in the wake of a very successful conference in 2009, the Globalization and Society in India (GSI) working group continue to foster innovative and cutting edge conversations on the role of globalization in India. However, over the past two years as the world economies and India (to a certain degree) enter new phases, where the unbridled economic growth of the past two decades comes to a staggering halt, it becomes pertinent to have the second part of the conversation that began two years ago. What now?

As the world changes and awakes to the growing chasm between the haves and the have nots, the working group commits itself to the project of asking whither which way India? While some argue that capitalism as a model for sustainable growth and equitable human rights has failed and others put forward the crumbled imagery of the exploitative communist state we ask what is the way ahead? We think it is vital to begin conversations that imagine and engage concrete alternative options for a vibrant and equitable India in the 21st century.

Keynote speaker, Chidanand Rajghatta of the Times of India brings a journalist’s perspective to the scholarship on carefully constructed panels. The day offers times for audience interaction and dialog and we invite you to encourage anyone interested in Globalization and India to spend the day in scholarly and critical conversations.

ALL early registrants are FREE including students, faculty, and other members of the public. Register by April 8th to attend the whole day at no charge. Registration at the door or after April 8th is $10.

The Global Affairs Program invites you to come listen to Sociology Professor Tony Roshan Samara illustrate his experiences and new book Cape Town After Apartheid: Crime and Governance in the Divided City. Cape Town After Apartheid has been described as being a "critical case for understanding a transnational view of urban governance, especially in highly unequal, majority-poor cities".

Tony Roshan Samara received his master's degree and doctorate in sociology from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a master's degree in American Studies from the City University of New York. Arizona State University is pleased to announce that its CRITICAL LANGUAGES INSTITUTE is now accepting applications for the 2012 session.

CLI courses are tuition free and open to any applicant over 18, including undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students. Non-ASU students and non-students are welcome CLI courses combine intensive language instruction in the U.S. with (optional) overseas immersion programs in 10 languages. Courses are tuition free for all participants and range from elementary to advanced mastery. Graduate and undergraduate funding is available for both U.S. and overseas study.

COURSE STRUCTURE:

MOST COURSES are offered in a 7+4 hybrid format: 7-weeks of instruction at ASU (June 4 – July 20; 8 credits) plus an optional 4-weeks of instruction overseas (July 23 – August 17; 3 credits). The two halves of the program share a single 11-week curriculum. Wherever possible, students study with the same instructors in both locations. The following courses are offered in this format:

Deborah Willis and Hank Willis Thomas' "Progeny" Photography Exhibition

George Mason University's School of Art and African and African American Studies Program present “Progeny,” a photography exhibition that is the first collaborative effort between Deborah Willis, an artist who received her doctorate in cultural studies from George Mason University in 2000, and her son, Hank Willis Thomas. Through memory, text and images, these two artists explore how familial narratives are shared through the generations and inform the way we look at the world. “Progeny” originally appeared in the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University in New York City in 2009 and now it comes to the Fine Art Gallery in the Art & Design Building at George Mason University from Feb. 1–29, 2012.

Named one of the “100 Most Important People in Photography” by American Photography Magazine, Deborah Willis now heads the photography and imaging program at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. A recipient of Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships, her photos focus on the African American female form and she is considered one of the nation’s leading historians and curators of African American photography and culture.

Hank Willis Thomas investigates themes of identity, history and popular culture and critiques advertising and cultural norms through his work, which also focuses on African American subjects. His work is in numerous public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

DC Bus Tour Trip

Join OIPS for a sightseeing tour of Washington D.C. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 12 to 5 p.m.

The tour will stop at the White House, the Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and Union Station.

The cost of the trip is $5 (includes transportation, snack and a beverage) and registration is required. Please stop in the OIPS office (SUB I room 4300) to register. This event is open to all Mason students.

In the case of inclement weather, the tour will make short stops at each landmark and visit the National Museum of American History.

Taiwan Studies Research Travel Grant Recipient: Ram Das Khalsa

Ram Das Khalsa is the recipient of the Taiwan Studies Research Travel Grant Sponsored by the Cultural Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO). Khalsa is a senior majoring in psychology and minoring in communication at George Mason University. He is also a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

The $2,500 award supports projects, courses and independent studies with a focus on Taiwan for students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. According to the Center for Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (CAPEC) website, “the grant is designed to give each student an opportunity to work closely with a designated faculty member and to explore resources in Taiwan. This may include (but not limited to) archives and libraries; historical sites; museums, art galleries and exhibits; performances; government agencies; non-profit organizations; businesses; experts, professors, scholars or individuals who could contribute to the student’s area of research” (http://capec.gmu.edu/taiwanstudies).

Khalsa discovered the grant as a student enrolled in the Global Proficiency Certificate (GPC) Program. Cheryl Choy, the Associate Director of the CAPEC

and an Advisory Board member of GPC supported Khalsa’s interest in pursuing

the grant award.

“I was impressed by Ram Das' sense of purpose and clarity on the paths he planned for himself. He has strong curiosity for other cultures and seriousness in learning, fostered possibly by his many years of exposure to Indian culture,” said Choy.

Khalsa’s interest in international culture has been greatly influenced on his unique upbringing. As a child of parents who were practitioners of yoga and the Sikh religion, Khalsa eventually went on to attend an international boarding school in India at the age of eight-years-old, despite having been born and raised in the United States. He graduated at sixteen as a certified Kundalini yoga instructor.

In order to apply for the award, Khalsa had to submit a research proposal plan outlining his perspective interests in Taiwanese culture. Once he returns from his travels, he is expected to submit a research paper and presentation on his findings.

“My research will be focused on the role of Longshan Temple (Oldest Temple in Taipei, Taiwan) as a center for social and religious interaction within the community,” said Khalsa.

Khalsa is also interested in exploring how Daoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Chinese folklore religious paths blend together, and how religious preference influences social activities within the community.

“These inter-religious groups communication fascinate me, as they show an alternate perspective that I feel I can learn from. One of my greatest passions ever since growing up in India has been traveling to foreign countries with drastically different cultures and absorbing their way of thought as a way to increase my empathy, and ability to communicate with others,” he said.

Beginning December 28th through January 11th, Khalsa will be staying in a student hostel while in Taiwan. The research curriculum is not structured and is independently organized. He is hoping to go beyond the typical tourist experience and gain a strong sense of inter-cultural exchange in the local community. This element is what initially attracted Khalsa to apply for the grant.

“I [felt] that this is a great opportunity for anyone who has the passion to learn about Taiwan be it social interactions, cultural questions, or even economic stimuli and crises,” he said.

Naliyah Kaya, Coordinator for GPC, was more than happy to write a recommendation for Khalsa in order to apply for the research grant.

“Ram Das has shown himself to be an extremely dedicated and independent student who takes his commitments seriously. He has a unique world perspective and ability to adapt given his background as an American student who spent much of his youth abroad at a boarding school. It was through his experience that he became interested in the link between religious practices and culture,” said Kaya.

After Khalsa graduates from George Mason University next semester, he expects to work professionally for a while. He eventually would like to pursue a master’s degree in business administration.

Community and Identity, Ireland
July 26-August 12th 2012

In this trip, students will have the opportunity to examine issues of poverty and community identity in the Republic of Ireland, as well as conflict and peacemaking in Northern Ireland from both literary and political perspectives. Students will spend several days in Limerick, Dublin, and Derry, meeting with key community and political actors in order to discuss the split between the Republic and Northern Ireland, community, and the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland and the successes of the peace process. Students will engage in a service projects with Trinity College in Dublin, and Project Children in Belfast, an organization dedicated to bringing youth together from different identity backgrounds. In addition to these important meetings and experiences in the Republic and Northern Ireland, students will have the additional opportunity to tour key political and literary sites in Limerick, Dublin, and Belfast. RACE: ʻa group of people who share a collective history and similar phenotype, but also a common culture.ʼ For all Americans, race is an everyday occurrence, or something we acknowledge as we go about our daily lives. Traditionally, race has meant lineage, but in a "post-racial" society, what is race exactly? If our society is now color-blind, or moving at a steady pace towards that goal, what does race mean? How do we know what race looks like? Obviously, defining race can depend on categories, such as: culture, age, sex, education, socio-economic status, political affiliation, and nationality. The intent of this photo show is to allow you, the students at George Mason University, to capture what you believe is race in your every day lives. To assist you in presenting your views on race, we ask that you use the medium of photography. The reason being is that the ascendancy of images, their inherent ability to document, and their expeditiousness, means that our word-based form
of communicating with one another, which was once totally sufficient, now requires the use of imagery. While ready definitions may not develop from these images, we anticipate there being fresh perspectives on the meanings of race through the insightful, creative, and observant framing of life by you, Mason's students.

Multi-racial people are the fastest growing demographic group in the United States. The population of American youth who identify as more than one race has increased almost 50%, just since 2000. We will discuss: What does it mean to be multi-racial and how does identifying in such a way affects our lives? What are the challenges of being multi-racial? What are the perks? How is this rapidly growing demographic group changing our society? What does the future hold?

November is not only the month in which Americans celebrate Thanksgiving; it is also a time for Native Americans to celebrate the tradition of honoring and remembering their ancestors and loved ones who have departed from the physical world.

Ghost Supper (also known as Spirit Feast) is a custom practiced by the Odawa and Ojibwe Nations of Northern Michigan. This tradition is similar to the Catholic ritual of All Souls Day and the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead. The feast is usually held during the first weekend of November.

The food prepared for the Ghost Supper include traditional Native American dishes such as turkey and dressing, venison, wild rice, fry bread, potatoes, squash, corn soup and smoked whitefish. After all the guests have finished with their meal, it is tradition to leave the dishes of remaining food on the table for the spirits who may pass by throughout the night.

A ceremonial fire is lit at dusk before the evening begins and it is put out at dawn. The fire represents a portal to the ancestral spirits that may return for the meal. Any food that is leftover at the end of the evening is burned in the fire as an offering.

Ghost Supper is not only an opportunity to remember those who have passed away, but also to reconnect with family and friends. After the meal is finished, many family members play card games and share stories of their ancestors. It is a time to be thankful for all of the wonderful people in our lives, present and past.

Sending New Year's postcards (nengajo) is an important custom in Japan. It's a tradition for Japanese people to write New Year's cards during November and December. Decorate your own holiday cards with traditional Japanese motifs, Japanese characters, and hand-made cherry blossom trees.

On Monday, October 24th, George Mason will welcome Madame Yan Junqi, a Vice Chair of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China and Chair of the China Association for Promoting Democracy, for a two-day visit.

On October 24th, Madame Yan will participate in the forum "Educating Global Citizens: China, the United States, and the World," joined by Provost Peter Stearns, from 2-3:30pm in the Meese Conference Room in Mason Hall. All are welcome and no RSVP is needed. A flyer for the forum is attached to this email.

Madame Yan will also deliver the 23rd annual Lynch Lecture for Mason's School of Conflict Analysis and Resolution on Tuesday, October 25th at 7pm on Mason's Arlington campus. All are welcome to attend--please RSVP to Lynch@gmu.edu.

Madame Yan has had a distinguished career in politics and academics and served as Vice Mayor of Shanghai prior to assuming a leadership role in Beijing in 2007. She holds a doctorate from the Denmark Institute of Technology and was also a faculty member and Dean of the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University. Money Makes the World Go ‘Round!

It is often difficult to comprehend the value a piece of paper money holds within society. A small piece of paper has the ability to buy a house, a car, a college education, etc. Money holds the same value throughout different cultures all around world and it has become a vital necessity in the modern global economy.

The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., is responsible for creating the American paper money that circulates through the United States. This process began in 1877 as the BEP became the sole producer of U.S. currency. Coins are not produced at the BEP and are separately issued at the United States Mint.

According to the BEP website (http://www.moneyfactory.gov), money is not actually made of paper, but composed of 75% cotton and 25% linen. Since 1929, U.S. currency has been printed using green ink. The continued use of green was due to the fact that the color was available in large quantities, it was resistance to chemical and physical changes and it is the color most often identified with wealth. Portraits of U.S. Presidents are featured on paper money because they are individuals most familiar to the public. The only exceptions to that rule are $10 and $100 bills, which feature Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury and Ben Franklin, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System website (http://www.federalreserve.gov) states that currency was historically dependent on the supply of gold and silver, but only until 1934. Currently, the Federal Reserve Banks must hold an equal amount of the money that is put into societal circulation. Many individuals question why the American economy is suffering when additional money can simply be printed, but it is much more complicated. According to an article written by John W. Schoen on msnbc.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7089510/ns/business-answer_desk/t/us-budget-deficit-fix-print-more-money/), increasing the amount of currency without increasing the value it represents only produces currency worth less than the original value.

“If you create more currency without raising the value of the whatever backs that currency, the value of the currency drops. That’s called inflation — you'll need more and more dollars to buy the same loaf of bread. the value backing its currency is (roughly) the strength of its economy and the size of its GDP, or all the goods and services it produces. If our economy grows, our dollar stays strong compared to other country’s currencies. But if we just started printing paper, the value of those dollars would fall and we’d see prices rise at the same rate,” Schoen wrote.

It seems that printing an endless supply of money would solve the current economical crisis in the United States, but that simply is not the case.

The 9th annual Washington, D.C. Turkish Festival will be held on Sunday, October 2nd from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The festival is held on Pennsylvania Avenue between 12th and 14th streets NW in front of Freedom Plaza and two blocks from the White House.

Celebrate Turkish culture with authentic Turkish cuisine, a Turkish coffee house and fortune telling, traditional Turkish music and folkdance performances, a Turkish Bazaar featuring arts and crafts, kids' games and activities, and much more!

The festival was started in 2003 by a small community group called the Turkish American Recreational and Cultural Organization (TURCO). Since 2008, the festival has attracted over 25,000 visitors every year.

The Turkish Festival is organized by the American Turkish Association of Washington, DC (www.atadc.org). It was selected as the Best Festival of Washington DC by the Readers of the Washington Citypaper in 2011. Turkish Festival is also a two-time grant receiver from the Washington DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

“…Mason personified the ideal type of citizen, the independent country gentleman whose opinions were entirely his own, beholden only to an impartial assessment of the public good. Mason’s genuine disdain for public office conferred additional authority. No one could accuse him of muffling his voice to curry political favor. Precisely because his inclinations were so private, he symbolized the ideal of republican virtue that permeated the constitutional experiments of 1776. If he was to be a public servant at all, he would act from duty only, not ambition.”

The man George Mason University is named for was an individual of high intellect and integrity. He was revered by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. He was devoted to the commonwealth of Virginia and was the central genius behind the American Revolution. And according to Tom Moncure, University Counsel for Mason, George Mason was the ideal patriot of his time.

George Mason was a fourth generation Virginian and the first son born to George and Ann Thomson Mason in 1725. He married twice, first to Ann Eilbeck in 1750 and later to Sarah Brent in 1780. He had twelve children, all of them with Ann. Mason was a reluctant politician and actually hated politics. He only served within the government because he felt he should. In order to understand Mason as an individual and political figure, Moncure stated that one must understand the importance of home and family.

Gunston Hall was built for George Mason from 1755 to 1759 by William Buckland and William Bernard Sears. Few changes were made after the original construction was complete in 1759. It was once the center of a 5,500-acre tobacco and corn plantation and it is a National Historic Landmark owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and administered by a Board of Regents appointed from The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America.

Moncure described Gunston Hall as a home and land that encapsulates the spirit of George Mason. He stated that it is evident why Mason never wanted to leave Gunston Hall once an individual visits the grounds. Mason recognized the paradigm and importance of family and it was hard for him to leave home. According to Moncure, the only time Mason left the state of Maryland and Virginia was to attend the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

As one of the finest late colonial homes in Virginia, Gunston Hall includes lavish natural grounds that include a family burial ground, a deer park, gardens, black heart cherry trees and orchards. The ground floor of the home features a little parlor, chamber, Palladian room and Chinese room, while the second floor contains seven bedchambers and a storage room.

Join us for a visit to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (http://www.moneyfactory.gov/):

Located in the heart of the Nation's Capital, the BEP's Washington, DC Tour and Visitor Center is a great place to learn all about U.S. paper currency. You can see millions of dollars being printed as you walk along the gallery overlooking the production floor! The free 40-minute experience includes an introductory film and gallery tour of the production process. The visitor center includes exhibits and currency products for sale.

Time: 10:30 am - 3:30 pm. The group will meet at 10:15 am in SUB I Patriots Lounge.

Cultural Fusion 2011

Cultural Fusion 2011 is just around the corner. It is a great opportunity for you to experience the diversity at Mason. The Princeton Review named George Mason University the most diverse campus in the nation back in 2002. However, students rarely get an opportunity to learn the cultures and traditions of their fellow students from all around the world. Cultural Fusion is a great chance to throw yourself into a new culture and enhance your knowledge.

On Tuesday 27 September, OIPS will be having a World Game table at the Quad (11 am - 3 pm). Take a a break from your study and join us for a game of a dice from Scandinavia, a “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” game from Japan (Fukuwarai), and a coin tossing game.

With our coin tossing game, you will learn how to say “heads or tails” in nine different languages. Coin tossing is the practice of throwing a coin in the air to choose between two alternatives. It is a form of sortition which has only two possible and equally likely outcomes.

Coin tossing is usually used in sports to decide factors such as which team takes which side of the field and which team goes first. However, in some countries, coin tossing is used to make some serious decisions in politics.

For example in United Kingdom, coin tossing can be used to decide the winner in the election. If a local or national election has a tie result where candidates receive the same amount of votes after three recounts, they can either draw lots, draw pack of cards to see which one draws a higher card, or flip a coin to decide which candidate wins the election.

You will learn these anecdotes about the games at our table. Learning about different cultures do not have to be with heavy textbooks. The best way is to experience them in fun ways!

There is much more to see, feel, and experience at Cultural Fusion. Come out, get involved and take advantage of Mason’s remarkable international community. Your attendance will help us raise the awareness for other cultures.

Tea has the ability to bring individuals together in all cultures; it is one similarity that crosses cultural boundaries. Historically, cafes served as the central point of social interaction.

International and domestic students will have the opportunity to join together and taste and sample tea, snacks and games from all over the world at the International Cafe.

The purpose of the International Cafe is to represent several cultures in a fun and educational setting. Students will share tea and snacks from a specific culture or region while playing an interactive game. The fairs are student run and any one interested in participating is welcome. Through the International Cafe, we hope to build a sense of community among the large and diverse student population of Mason.

The International Cafe will be held on the first Wednesday of each month in October, November, February and March in the Patriot Lounge of SUB I from 12 to 2 p.m.

What is Cultural Fusion?
Cultural Fusion was started by two Mason students (Minu Ramanan and Naliyah Kaya) in 2008 as a way to celebrate the diversity at George Mason University. Cultural Fusion seeks to create an educational and recreational environment for students, staff, and faculty to network by creating, building, and solidifying relationships across cultures. Through immersing domestic and international students in world music, dance, sports, and games, Cultural Fusion emphasizes the importance and significance of learning about and understanding cultures to which we do not belong.

When is Cultural Fusion 2011?
Tuesday September 27: Field Day and Table Fair (world sports and games)
Wednesday September 28: Performances and Activities (dance, music and art workshops)
Thursday September 29: Performances and Activities (dance, music and art workshops)

You can find us at the Quad, Fairfax Campus. (The buildings Student Union Building I, Robinson A, Fenwick Library, and Krug Hall make up the main "Quad').
